Following top treats for progressive rock and metal fans with performances by American guitarist Jeff Loomis and UK composer Steven Wilson in the last two months, there’s more to look forward to in the new year.

Los Angeles prog metal band Intronaut, who first performed in India in 2009, will return to headline the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru’s fourth annual cultural festival Pravega on January 21st.

The band’s thundering mix of prog and post-metal, best showcased on albums such as 2010’s Valley of Smoke and more recently, their 2015 album The Direction of Last Things, took them to tour alongside the likes of progressive metal’s topline, including Tool, Mastodon and Tesseract. On the back of their second album Prehistoricisms, Intronaut landed in India in October 2009, playing at the 13th edition of the Great Indian Rock Festival in New Delhi and Kolkata.

Intronaut’s India show at Pravega is also the festival’s first shot at bringing an international headliner, when their pro-nites have previously featured the likes of rockers Agnee, Carnatic prog band Agam, prog/psych band Parvaaz and more. Says Sambit Banerjee, the festival’s cultural coordinator, “We had been planning to have an international artist right from the start of our preparations this year, as our constant endeavor is to feature some of the best artists in the world in our pronites. Intronaut has a huge following in prog and metal circles and they have stunned the crowd once before in India. They sounded really exciting to our team.”

New Delhi-based guitarist-vocalist Dhruv Visvanath will also perform at Pravega on January 21st.
