Taking home the award in the Best Children’s Album category for her record A Colorful World, Falguni Shah, widely known by her moniker Falu, created history at this year’s Grammys, becoming the only female Indian origin artist to win an award in this category.

Ahead of her historic win, Falu performed the opening number at the Grammy Premiere ceremony. This wasn’t Falu’s first brush with the Recording Academy nomination. In 2018, the singer was nominated in the same category for her record Falu’s Bazaar.

“I’m so happy, honored and blessed to have won a Grammy,” Falu expresses in her statement. “It’s a dream come true for a girl who grew up in India, who had never thought that she could win a Grammy one day.” Falu’s 2021 album was recorded to “encourage diversity, acceptance, and tolerance in Children,” whilst helping children see the world as colorful as it really is. Reflecting on the core messaging of the album, the singer-songwriter further elucidates; “No matter humanity’s differences, we can all live together peacefully on this planet.”

“We are celebrating! Once we reflect on this experience and take a moment to let it all sink in,” Falu adds to her excitement. Honoring her Indian roots and cultural heritage, she describes how her experiences back home have influenced her artistry, “I find am so grateful to India. I’m so blessed, thankful and honored to be an Indian. I learned so much of what I know today in India. I’m also grateful for all I have experienced in America and for the incredible people I have been blessed to work with here. Thank you!”.

Earlier this year, Falu sat down with Rolling Stone India to reflect on what her musical endeavors have taught her so far. “As an artist of color, trying to succeed in a foreign country has been challenging,” she opened up. “I have learned about the culture, the work ethics, the way people work with each other, the way things work in the music business. This journey has taught me to never give up and to continue dreaming big. I had to envision that the sky is the limit. I also learned to not be scared of failing. When something fails, I take that as a learning experience. I have learned from my mistakes, and making those tumbles is an integral part of my journey. “
