Itzy Return With Their First Original English Single ‘Boys Like You’

The track serves as a pre-release single from the quintet’s upcoming album

Not too long ago, Itzy embraced their queenship on their summer 2022 release “Sneakers.” Today, the K-pop quintet have returned with their first original English single “Boys Like You,” empowering listeners to steer away from men who are no match for them.

Composed by Didrik Thott, Sebastian Thott and Hayley Aitken, “Boys Like You,” draws its sonic influences from the entrancing lineage of the pop-punk sound. The track has a refreshing and crunchy bass, opening a gateway for the groovy synth to slowly grow on you. The vocal performances complement the soundscape with members Yeji, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong and Yuna passing on the mic, deepening the sonic appeal of the track with their distinctive vocal styles.

Lyrically, the song outlines the events following an untimely breakup caused by an unfaithful partner: “Why you callin’ me up sayin’ sorry again/ Already told you we’re done/ What didn’t you get/ Don’t forget you’re the one/ That tried to get with my friends/ The end, the end, the end, the end.” As the members assert their independence and freedom from a relationship that lacked trust, the pre-chorus echoes the underlying reason behind the breakup. Turns out that the incompetent man was no match for the members: “Take a look into that mirror/ If you wonder why you lost me/ Gotta sit down and shut up/ You did it to yourself.” In true Itzy fashion, the song serves as a reminder to their fandom (midzy) to always acknowledge their value and never settle for anything less than what they deserve.

Tapping into the spirit of Halloween, the music video takes place at a season-themed party, where all five members find themselves eyeing a mysterious and gorgeous knight. As the party continues, the true unfaithful nature of the knight unravels as he hops from one woman to another. Choosing their happiness and far more valuable friendship, the members ditch the party, leaving behind a sad and mopey knight as they run over to a secret location with the rest of the crowd to continue the party.

“Boys Like You” gives the audience a glimpse into Itzy’s upcoming album slated to be announced soon. Earlier this year, the group released their fifth EP Checkmate, led by the electro-pop single “Sneakers.” Since then, the quintet has announced their first world tour, with the Asia leg announced a few days back, and released a second Japanese single, “Blah Blah Blah.”
