The four-track record houses distorted guitars, groovy basslines, pulsating drums and more
Rock trio Jack Of Spade’z, comprising Manipur-bred musicians, vocalist-guitarist Alem Mahukva and bassist Ngatik Asara as well as New Delhi-based drummer Adhyan Emerson recently released their high-octane four-track debut EP Roller Coaster.
The band began work on the EP this past January and fine-tuned the tracks over and over again until they were happy with the way they were turning out. Roller Coaster opens with the crunchy blues rock offering “Live On” before we hear the riff-heavy “Mystery.” Next is the scintillating “Spectacle Girl” and the EP closes with the dancey “Off-Track.” Sonically, Jack Of Spade’z stays true to their rock roots with distorted guitars, groovy basslines, pulsating drums as well as plenty of dynamics, solos, bluesy sections and steely vocals.
In a statement, the band talks about what the songs on the EP mean, “Roller Coaster features four songs covering the issues of life! Even though the name of the EP was kept after considering the journey of the band so far, yet the song titles and moreover the meanings of the songs were kept looking at how life turns out in the end.”
Jack Of Spade’z recorded the EP live and finished it all in eight hours. Asara says, “We didn’t even finish one year playing together as a band and we ended up recording an EP.” Emerson adds, “When we entered the studio, they had our name written as the artist who were doing the session that day. That feeling made me feel like a superhero.” Mahukva says about recording live, “As a band we strongly feel that the impact we deliver playing together is just different.”
The band isn’t done just yet with releasing music this year. They are lining up two more singles to be out before the end of 2023. The group says, “The sound of Jack Of Spade’z is going to be much bigger and louder.”
