Coming in from Poland for his India debut this week, guitarist-composer and producer Jakub Zytecki says he’s looking forward to “finally bathe in sunshine” in this part of the world. “I haven’t experienced that pretty much since October,” he says with a laugh.
Zytecki, who is joined by drummer Józef Rusinowski and bassist Michal Sarapata, will bring fantastical modern instrumental prog to two shows as part of Oddball Festival in New Delhi and Bengaluru (February 25th) this weekend, followed by club shows in Kochi (February 29th) and Mumbai (March 1st). He adds, “I can’t wait to experience the culture and its people.”
Arriving on the back of releasing his album Remind Me last year, Zytecki has established himself over the years as a prog whiz who’s supported and performed with fellow guitar heroes like Plini and more. Zytecki – formerly of Polish prog band Disperse – has likely heard a few stories about India from Plini, the Australian artist who’s toured India a few times over the years. Zytecki adds, “I’ve heard the rumors about Indian fans being super passionate during shows which makes me super happy. I love to feel the energy from the crowd!”
At Oddball and the club shows, Zytecki is performing what he calls “probably the longest [set] we’ve ever done.” He adds, “We’ll play songs from my whole catalog.” There might even be a few surprises that dig into Zytecki’s early days. For anyone catching him for the first time – which will be most of the attendees in India – Zytecki jokingly describes his concerts as “dreamcore at its finest.” He adds, “I want the show to be like a journey, a place to live in for a certain period of time. I don’t like talking much between songs, I rather want the tracks to be flowing into each other and gradually move from one emotion to another.”
The India tour starts off a new year for the artist after he saw “one of the heaviest years of my life due to some personal issues” in 2023. He says, “We’ve also toured a lot which was incredibly gratifying but also tiring, as I tried to do too many things at once. With that being said, I decided to make some major changes in my musical camp. I guess I’ve learnt that it is alright to ask for help and not try to do everything on my own.”
