James Cameron Heads to the Volcanic Side of Pandora in New ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer

The third film in Cameron’s epic saga will find Jake Sully, Neytiri, and the Metkayina squaring off against a villainous tribe of Na’vi known as the “Ash People”

Jake Sully and Neytiri venture to the volcanic side of Pandora in the new trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is set to arrive Dec. 19.

The new clip for the third installment of the hit franchise does not offer much in the way of plot, but it is filled with Cameron’s characteristically resplendent visuals. The film will primarily center around a clash with the “Ash People,” a more villainous Na’vi tribe that Sully, Neytiri, and the Metkayina — the water clan from The Way of Water — must confront amid their larger war over Pandora with the colonizing forces of the Resources Development Administration.

The Fire and Ash trailer offers the first glimpses of Oona Chaplin as Varang, the leader of the Ash People, who menacingly closes the clip by saying, “Your goddess has no dominion here.” Additionally, the clip finds Jake and Neytiri grappling with the fallout from the events in The Way of Water, specifically the death of their oldest son, Neteyam.

“You cannot live like this, baby – in hate,” Sully tells Neytiri.

Fire and Ash will find Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña reprising their roles as Sully and Neytiri, while other returning cast members include Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Jack Champion, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, and Kate Winslet. Along with Chaplin, the film will feature new cast members Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis.

Cameron filmed Fire and Ash back-to-back with The Way of Water, hence the three-year wait between sequels (the gap between the original Avatar and The Way of Water was 13 years). Two more Avatar films are in the works, with the fourth installment set to arrive in 2029 and the fifth in 2031.
