Mumbai-based singer-songwriter teams up with producer and artist Timothy Thampy for his latest song

Indian-Nepalese singer-songwriter Janisht Joshi’s new song “Nahi” sees the artist genre-hopping between singer-songwriter, rock and synth-pop all in the span of two-and-a-half-minutes. The song, produced by Timothy Thampy, also comes with a music video that takes us to Joshi’s birthday party.
Released via Robach Music Group, “Nahi” follows Joshi’s breakout singles like “Kaagaz Ke Phool” from 2023. Often flittering between Hindi and English songs, Joshi brings nostalgic influences as well as modern reverb-drenched indie sensibilities to the front, along with Thampy.
In “Nahi,” Joshi delves on ideas of self-preservation and how that “takes priority over vulnerability,” according to a press release. The release adds, “Blending indie rock influences with heartfelt lyricism, the song explores the fear of vulnerability and the reluctance to truly feel one’s emotions.” Joshi says in his statement, “This is my first real rock song, and I’ve let myself create something that feels true to me, without worrying about what works.”
Lyrically, Joshi has said he draws inspiration from the poetry of Sahir Ludianvi, specifically taking from the themes of “melancholic realities of love and life.” On working with producer Thampy, Joshi says, “Timothy has the patience of a saint. He’s made this song what it is with his production skills and ability to deal with my ‘old-man’ explanations of technology.”
The music video for “Nahi” is directed by filmmaker Amun Khot, described as a “longtime collaborator” of Joshi. From raining confetti to swapping an acoustic guitar for an electric, lighting up a party horn like a cigarette and of course, cutting cake, there’s plenty of action packed into the video.
Joshi says, “The music video was shot in a weathered, nostalgic bungalow where my closest friends and I have spent countless years gathering. It perfectly captures the bittersweet theme of growing older and the quiet discomfort that comes with it.”
