In a teaser trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which dropped Sunday night, Jason Momoa returns to his DC superhero role as Arthur Curry, King of Atlantis. The 30-second spot offered glimpses into the long-awaited Aquaman sequel, along with the promise of the arrival of a full-length trailer just four days later.
The first-look reveals footage of Black Manta, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, vowing to avenge his father’s death. “I’m gonna kill Aquaman and destroy everything he holds dear,” declares the villain amid footage of Arthur’s childhood home in flames. The teaser also reveals shots of Patrick Wilson as Orm, the former king of Atlantis, and Nicole Kidman as Arthur’s mother, Queen Atlanna.
The James Wan-directed sequel will premiere on December 20, five years after Aquaman hit theatres in 2018.
The logline of the sequel reads, “Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.”
Noticably absent from the teaser is Momoa’s costar Amber Heard, who returns to the sequel as Mera, princess of Xebel and Arthur’s love interest. In May of 2024, DC Film’s president Walter Hamada testified at the defamation trial of Heard and Johnny Depp, revealing that Heard’s role had been intentionally pared back. Hamada said the new movie was thought of “from the very early stages of development” as a “buddy comedy” between Aquaman and his half-brother, King Orm, played by Patrick Wilson.
