Ji Chang-wook’s Upcoming K-Dramas in 2024

Ji Chang-wook has new dramas for us this year, reiterating his signature good looks and acting skills in more intriguing roles

Ji Chang-wook’s portrayal maintains a piercing sharpness throughout his time on screen. He is a dynamic instinctual actor—very romantic, intriguing, feisty, cute, and often profound, but ultimately one of our time’s finest swashbuckling Korean heroes.

Several television hits followed Ji’s breakout role in Smile Again (2010–2011)—Warrior Baek Dong-soo (2011), Empress Ki (2013–2014), Healer (2014–2015), The K2 (2016), Suspicious Partner (2017), Melting Me Softly (2019), Backstreet Rookie (2020), Lovestruck in the City (2020–2021), Sound of Magic (2022), If You Wish Upon Me (2022), The Worst of Evil (2023–2024), and Welcome to Samdal-ri (2023–2024). This time around, with his signature attractiveness and seasoned acting, he’s taking center stage again in the following dramas.

Director Park Noo-ri’s investigation crime thriller Gangnam B-Side features an ostracized detective who is forced back to his line of work when his daughter’s friend disappears, and an upsurge of women are reported missing. He will dig deeper into the shadows of immorality, narcotics, and crime with the aid of a lawyer and Ji’s Yoon Gil-ho, a shady broker dominating the Gangnam neighborhood of Seoul, seeking out something that could potentially knock some of the region’s most powerful elites to their knees.

Having beaten the odds in The Worst of Evil by snatching up a crime syndicate in Gangnam during the 1990s, Ji is now back to the darker side of things with Gangnam B-Side. The Disney+ series is set to be released later this year.

Then there’s Queen Woo, the TVING original series, an epic action story directed by Jung Se-kyo, wherein, shortly after the death of King Go Nam-moo (Ji), the ninth ruler of Korea’s Goguryeo kingdom, all the clans he held engage in a bloody, vicious war.

The centerpiece of the drama is Jeon Jong-seo‘s Queen Woo-hee. She marries the late king’s brother to keep wielding the rod of authority. This makes her the first woman in history to have held the title of queen twice. Her second marriage follows the Goguryeo levirate marriage custom, which states that a deceased man’s brother must marry his brother’s widow.

Ji’s Go Nam-moo, per an article from Ji Chang Wook’s Kitchen, the actor’s English fan site, is sufficiently savvy to command 5,000 combatants and vanquish the 30,000 Han Dynasty soldiers. Anarchy breaks out in the palace soon after he leaves, even though he is a model monarch who is morally upright and endowed with dignity and kindness. The article further reveals that Ji Chang-wook plans to go into greater detail about Go Nam-moo, who becomes a bone of contention in the story.

A release date for Queen Woo is yet to be announced, though it is scheduled to premiere this year.

Ji Chang-wook’s upcoming K-dramas in 2024 may as well include him starring in the superhero series Twelve, sharing screen time with Ma Dong-seok, aka Don Lee, based on recent online media reports. Under the creative lens of director Kang Dae-gyu, Twelve will bring together a fine roster of actors, playing an eclectic cast of superheroes with special abilities. The narrative follows these heroes banding together for Korea’s safety from detrimental elements.

For Ji Chang-wook, Twelve will be his first foray into exploring the world of superhero fiction, should he accept the offer. Ji is said to have gotten a role as one of the superheroes, alongside Ma, who will take on Tae San, the squad’s commander.
