As ROLLING STONE India turns six this month, we invited yet another cross section of the country’s leading designers, graphic artists and musicians to interpret the magazine cover in their personal vision, as part of our ongoing annual feature, Cover As Art Project. And like in the previous years, the themes that inspired them spanned a wide range of ideas ”” underground parties, Bollywood mixes, mythical warlords, celluloid superstars etc.

Musician And Visual Artist

Kamal is a musician and illustrator from Bengaluru. Better known as the guitarist of post-rock band Lounge Piranha, he also writes songs under the monikers 3 Sevens and Hoirong while trying to make a living by designing T-shirts among other things at Hypno Owl, an independent fashion label. He has temporarily moved to Delhi to study music therapy.

The Idea

A deeply philosophical friend of mine, Sandeep, corrupted me with the first spark that led to this illustration. It’s supposed to be a scene at a super awesome underground party.

The residents here think human beings are fascinating creatures and are in complete awe of their amazing social skills, as you will notice in the posters of the most famous songs in these parts of the burrows – “Man In the Mirror,” “Spoon Man,” “Man Who Sold The World” and “Iron Man.”

I think all Indian bands are underground by default and Rolling Stone India makes whatever is happening more accessible.
