Kapil Sharma has often had his guests (and by extension, the audience) in splits with his comedy banter, but now he’s throwing smoldering looks and attempting to personify “intense heartbreak” as a singer on the song “Alone,” which his composed, written and co-sung by pop star Guru Randhawa.

Sharma, the host of The Kapil Sharma Show, says Randhawa was the one who suggested he get on the track as a singer. “I just couldn’t say no. He boosted my confidence and gave me some very helpful tips, due to which I could give my best to this song,” Sharma says. Randhawa adds, “While I was shooting for Kapil Sharma’s show, we had discussed the idea of doing a song together, and I am so glad to see it come to life. I think our voices blend well together and I can’t wait for my fans to hear it.”

“Alone,” which is released by T-Series and has a music video starring Sharma, Randhawa and actor Yogita Bihani, addresses the “grey side of love,” according to the actor-turned-singer. “We’ve all experienced heartbreak at some point in our lives and I feel everyone will relate to it,” Sharma adds. Randhawa points out that the music video was shot in Manali when it was -6°C amidst mountains on a somewhat clear day. “It was a surreal experience,” the pop artist says.

With his first song out now, Sharma says he’s going to work on more material as a singer in the future. “In fact, after the teaser of ‘Alone’ was released, a lot of people sent me scratch versions of their songs, so I’m currently listening to those songs and hoping to go ahead with a few,” he adds. Sharma talks about being connected to “pure melody” of songs but wouldn’t mind surprising fans with an “upbeat song.”

Randhawa, for his part, can proudly claim he’s helped bring out a new side to Sharma. When it comes to showbiz stars in India, the singer-songwriter and composer says it would be an achievement to work with the biggies someday. “I would love to sing for Shah Rukh, Salman sir and Amitabh Bachchan sir,” Randhawa says.
