Mumbai-based musician Karan Ghosh’s first tryst with music began when he began playing classical piano at the age of nine before picking up the guitar by the time he turned 14. He says, “I spent so much time on the guitar and was constantly progressing and discovering new genres.” Previously part of alt-rock/prog band Alder Eye, Ghosh has now pivoted to being a solo artist. “I realized that the music I was making with my band was not easily understood by non-musicians. At the end of the day, I just wanted to be listenable,” he says. Now the guitarist-composer is out with his debut solo single, the pop ballad “Good Luck,” featuring The Rish on vocal duties.

Ghosh penned the new song about a year ago and explains that it revolves around heartbreak. “This was actually the first time I wrote lyrics to a song, with the help of my producer and co-writer Kabir Hiranandani,” says the artist. According to the musician, he had experienced a “toxic relationship” and would find himself having very low self-esteem. “Working on this song was the only thing that gave me a sense of purpose. That made me feel good inside,” says Ghosh. The artist does point out that the theme of the song is redemption and standing up for yourself. He says, “If this song can provide comfort for people the way it did for me, then I feel I have done my job as a songwriter.”

The track includes poignant acoustic guitar plucking, a relaxed groove, laidback vocals from The Rish as well as lush backing vocals by Dear Kokum (formerly known as k o k u m). The song also includes contributions from bassist Kamran Raza (of Mumbai hardcore band Death By Fungi) while Dishaan Gidwani mixed it and Tamzid Rahman from Mumbai’s Space Cat Studios mastered it.

Ghosh is currently writing new material and is planning to start work on a few demos soon. He says, “I think I took too much time from the inception of ‘Good Luck’ to the release of it. This time I’m confident I’ll have new music out much sooner.”
