The track has been produced by singer-composer Leslee Lewis
Mumbai-based singer Kavya Jones is out with a brand new pop single called “Oo Oo Mere Dil Mein Tu.” The track follows last year’s “Tu Hai Mera” and includes the production touch from seasoned artist Leslee Lewis (from fusion/pop duo Colonial Cousins).
In this interview with Rolling Stone India, Jones talks to us about her early years and how she joined Lewis’ band, her new song and what’s coming up next. Read excerpts below.
How did you fall into music and then join Leslee Lewis’ band?
My parents are both in the field of entertainment. I started singing when I was five years old. I started training in Hindustani classical when I was 10, after that I went into Western classical and then I joined The Stop Gaps as a soprano singer for two years. I was a part of that choir, so I’ve got the taste of both worlds. But I think when I went to college, I got exposed to college festivals.
So, music somehow took a backseat. Then I got into dance, modeling, and acting, and somehow, I didn’t sing. For my graduation, that’s when I joined a fusion group, and we started doing all these college festivals. A couple of years later I was told that Leslee Lewis was looking out for a female vocalist, and I joined his band and actually, it just happened. When I joined the band, I think I came into the mainstream. Now I’m in the professional field, music is not just a hobby, now it’s a job.
What can you tell us about your new song “Oo Oo Mere Dil Mein Tu”?
It’s a pop song. We were contemplating whether I should come out with a ballad or another pop song. What should I do? I felt I should do something along the lines of it being a pop song. So sir [Lewis] came up with this really cool track. When he played me the song, it was an instant connection because if you hear the song, the instrumentation around the song is very jazz, but the singing is very pop. When the lyrics were coming to play, it felt like a young 15-year-old or 18-year-old girl talking about her crush to her friends.
There’s a video coming out also to accompany the song, what can we expect from it?
The video is interesting, I’ve got six young school-going girls dancing and we look at the camera to tell that guy there that you are mine. So, the video is different than what I’ve done before and it has a storyline.
What’s coming up next for you?
There are a few songs that I have sung which I’ve done with a few other people. I’m hoping that those should be released early next year. They are collaborations with young artists.
