Kevin of Omega X Opens Up About His Acting Debut in ‘My Bias Is Showing’
The K-pop idol explores complex emotions as a fan-turned-love interest in the BL drama, co-starring Kim Kang-min
Korean BL dramas have a distinct way of portraying the genre, prioritizing solid emotional connection over physical attraction, which isn’t usually the case with Thai or Western BL series. And thus, their slow-burning romances, emotional depth, and nuanced storytelling rarely fail to make an impression—just take the case of hits like Where Your Eyes Linger (2020), Light on Me (2021), Cherry Blossoms After Winter (2022), Semantic Error (2022), and A Shoulder to Cry On (2023). These BL K-dramas have set the bar high, paving the way for stories like the ongoing My Bias Is Showing! starring Kim Kang-min and Omega X’s Kevin.
In his first acting role, Kevin plays Na Ae-joon, a high school teacher who happens to be a longtime fan of popular boy group A-one member Choi Si-yeol (Kim Kang-min). When Ae-joon’s path unexpectedly crosses paths with Si-yeol, who is filming a variety show at his school, their encounter sets off a complex entanglement of love and revenge. Speaking with Rolling Stone India about how he tapped into Si-yeol’s journey, particularly in navigating the complexities of fan-idol relationships, Kevin says, “When I see Ae-joon, I think of ‘pure love.’ There are many complicated emotions that may not always align between Ae-joon and Si-yeol in their relationship of a fan and an idol, but one thing that never changes is Ae-joon’s pure love and admiration for his bias. I really wanted to capture that emotion well.”
Since the drama explores themes of fandom and idol culture, Kevin explains that certain scenes highlight Ae-joon’s unfiltered emotions—like when he hides his admiration for Si-yeol to avoid discomfort or when he takes care of Si-yeol indirectly. “I wanted to convey the sense of relatability for Ae-joon’s pure love as a fan of Si-yeol,” he adds, hoping the audience connects deeply with the story. “I hope the viewers can find Ae-joon’s love for his bias relatable when watching the drama. As this is my first try at acting, my performance might be seen as awkward, lacking, or sometimes overacting because I want to give my best. However, it’d make me very happy if the viewers find me with the potential to become a good actor, and I also want to cheer myself by thinking, ‘You did well enough, and you have enough possibilities for the future too.’”
Kevin draws his acting inspiration from dramas and movies, with Weak Hero being a significant influence. “I’ve always had a passion for acting, but watching that drama gave me the courage to push myself and step forward in taking on a new challenge.” He often replays his favorite scenes, analyzing performances and wondering, “How did this actor express that emotion here?” Among his favorite actors, Kim Kuk-hee stands out. “There are many actors and actresses I like and admire, but I am always mesmerized by Kim Kuk-hee’s acting, because she can pull off any character in various genres.” For the rookie actor, the allure of acting lies in its ability to bring diverse characters to life: “That’s one of the reasons why I hope to continue acting,” he says.
My Bias Is Showing! has been the initial stepping stone for the acting career that Kevin is looking forward to. It’s also been a series of memorable moments for him. Reflecting on his experience of working with co-star Kim Kang-min, Kevin shares, “For me, the most memorable time was when we got to film together. It was our very first time working together, and Kang-min is a very cool person, just like how Si-yeol is portrayed in the eyes of Ae-joon.” Kang-min helped Kevin feel at ease on set, offering valuable tips on facial expressions and gestures. “So, I got a lot of help from him.” Drawing from his own experience as a K-pop idol, Kevin infused his portrayal of Na Ae-joon with authenticity. “I wanted to express my personal thoughts from interacting with fans in my acting. Also, I could really resonate with the overflowing love from my fans that I have been receiving so far, and I tried my best to capture that love in this drama.”
