Killzone 3

[Four stars] Sony Genre: First-Person Shooter Price: Rs 2,499 (PS3)

Killzone 3 is a satisfyingly challenging game. At six hours it doesn’t overstay its welcome with unnecessary levels to fill up time. It doesn’t skimp on the narrative either. Sure it isn’t as long as other games on the market but it’s a lot more remarkable than most simply because for its duration, it ends up being an epic ride.

In the course of that time you will square off against bosses that fill up your entire screen, traverse icebergs on a jet pack and drive massive tanks. There’s even a level that has you being as stealthy as possible a la Metal Gear Solid. The variety is astounding and works to the game’s advantage as there rarely is a dull moment.

Complementing the frenetic pace of the campaign are some gorgeous graphics. It looks extremely good ”“ right up there with Uncharted 2 in being a showcase for the PS3. The premise is also a set up for some great special effects and lighting too.

The storyline immediately follows the events of Killzone 2. You’re Sev, a solider stuck with other stray human forces after an attack on the alien planet of Helghan goes awry. Much like Killzone 2 you will be facing the game’s iconic villains, the Helghast, in their various shapes and forms. From new the stealthy predator-like soldiers to old favourites like the heavies, they’re all there.

And when you’re done with the single-player, there’s a robust multiplayer segment to partake in. It’s slick, fast-paced and generally fun, unless you’re the sort of person who has spent an insane amount of time playing Killzone 2‘s tactical, deliberate multiplayer.  If you’re the sort who did then Killzone 3 would have quite a steep learning curve. The multiplayer has more in common with the Call of Duty games rather than its predecessor so it’s a matter of personal taste.

From where we see it, Killzone 3 is yet another in a long line of Sony exclusives that manages to deliver on almost all accounts. While it would be interesting to see if the multiplayer mode manages to sustain the fans of Killzone 2, others would feel right at home in what is perhaps the year’s first great shooter.
