‘I’m Looking Forward to How Much Love and Passion the Indian Fans Will Show Me’: Kim Woo-jin
The artist gets candid on his expanding career, his musicality, what he desires to communicate via his work, and his excitement for The Moment Tour India
Kim Woo-jin (popularly Woojin) is here with The Moment Tour India, making for some delectable K-pop music. At the time of writing, he has already performed in Delhi as part of the Road to Cherry Blossom Festival 2023; his next up is in Dimapur, Nagaland, on October 26, ahead of a stint at the K-wave Festival in Bengaluru on October 28, and a concert in Mumbai on October 29.
Woojin aims to present a feast that covers the facets of his artistic expression to engage us. Performances from his second mini-album, The Moment: Bounce—telling a tale of maturation and growth as a follow-up to his first, The Moment: A Minor, centered on the range of emotions one may experience as an adolescent before walking into society as an adult—are included in his set.
The artist’s rise to stardom has been rather demanding as he forged his journey, entering Stray Kids as a vocalist in 2017, departing the band shortly after two years, and launching a solo career up until now when he is sweeping over fans globally. Woojin has begun lending vocals to K-Drama OSTs such as King the Land and Reborn Rich, alongside starring in the HBO Max original series, Beyond the Wardrobe (2023), which adds to his diversity as a performer.
The 26-year-old gets candid on his expanding career, his musicianship, and what he mostly desires to communicate via his work while also revealing how thrilled he is to be in India and performing here. “I’m nervous and excited,” he says, adding, “To my CUBS, thank you for your continued support, and let’s meet together and have a good time in India. I love you.” Read the edited excerpts below.
Your musical career is expanding with time. How has the ride been thus far?
I’ve been focusing on what I can do to show you my recent album with my colors. Besides, I try to participate in different genres in various ways, like musicals, dramas, and so on. Also, I’ve worked on some K-dramas as a part of the OST.
What characterizes your music?
It’s rooted in pop music, and I try to incorporate K-pop dance styles into my performances. Since I don’t have plenty of songs yet, I’m in the process of finding my style while staying open-minded, and of course, I’m thinking a lot about what CUBS would like.
I guess music is the most effective medium for you to wear your heart on your sleeves. What do you want to convey through your music?
As you said, music is the biggest influence on my life, and I believe that has always been the case—music has always been a part of my life. Of course, genre and style matter, but I place a higher priority on giving a good message to my fans.
The music business is constantly evolving; it relies on earnings, statistics, and, these days, most definitely, on how you promote your work. What are your thoughts on this?
No matter what business we’re in, I think it’s crucial to have characteristics that set us apart from the crowd. I make music that makes the best use of my voice and strengths; I strive to showcase my voice in a variety of ways.
You’re also lending your voice to K-drama OSTs. In light of this, what are some of your projects in the pipeline?
I don’t have any fixed plans yet, but as good opportunities arise, I’ll take part in such projects as much as possible.
What are some of your favorite K-dramas? Any genres and characters you’d like to try in the ensuing years if you were to act in them?
My favorite drama is Squid Game. I haven’t had many experiences yet, so I’d like to try out different roles, especially those in the action genre.
You’re certainly a multi-hyphenated artist, rushing off your feet, but do you ever feel a little drained because of this? What are you missing the most these days?
I usually enjoy trying new things. It can be challenging with a range of activities, such as musicals and dramas, in addition to singing, but it nonetheless makes me happy. I’m just satisfied right now.
How do you feel about the Hallyu wave, its enormity, and the rising renown of K-culture?
As a citizen of the Republic of Korea, I am happy that K-culture has grown in popularity. I’ll work hard to further elevate the status of K-culture.
K-content has an avid fan base in India; we’re glad that you’re performing in India thanks to The Moment Tour. Would you like to say something to your Indian fans?
To begin with, I’m looking forward to how much love and passion the Indian fans will show me not only in Mumbai but also in Delhi, Dimapur, and Bengaluru. And I’m nervous and excited. To my CUBS, thank you for your continued support, and let’s meet together and have a good time in India. I love you.
