Kris Wu Sentenced To 13 Years in Prison for Rape, Fined $84 Million for Tax Evasion
Following the completion of his sentence Wu will be deported to Canada.
Earlier today, Beijing Chaoyang People’s Court pronounced Chinese-Canadian Actor Kris Wu guilty on charges of rape and licentious group activities.
The actor has been sentenced to 11 and a half years of imprisonment for his rape charges and one year and 10 months for group licentiousness, bringing the total sentence to 13 years. Following the completion of his sentence Wu will be deported to Canada.
Reports of Wu’s accusations first came to light in July 2021 when Du Meizhu — a 19 year-old Chinese university student and beauty influencer — claimed to be Wu’s ex-girlfriend and publicly posted allegations regarding the singer’s infidelity and alleged predatory behavior. Wu denied the allegations.
As the revelations caught heat on social media, luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Porsche, Lancôme, Kiehl’s, EtherealSound and more cut ties with Wu, with several announcing that they were suspending or terminating their contracts with the rapper. Wu was then detained by the Beijing police in July 2021. In June 2022, he was tried on accounts of rape and group licentiousness.
Furthermore, Wu has also been found guilty of tax evasion between 2019 and 2020. According to CCTV News, Wu “evaded taxes of 95,000,000 CNY by falsifying business operations and hiding his income through multiple domestic and foreign affiliated corporations.” The actor also “failed to pay other taxes amounting to 84,000,000 CNY.” The court has now ordered Wu to pay a fine of CNY 600,000,000 CNY (INR 683 crores).
Wu first rose to fame as part of K-pop boy group Exo. Following his departure from the group in 2014, Wu set his base in China where he worked on several music and acting projects as a soloist.
