Lady Gaga Climbs Ev’ry High Note in ‘Sound of Music’ Tribute

Performance celebrates the musical film's 50th anniversary

For the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, Lady Gaga belted out a gorgeous medley of songs from the film at the 2015 Oscars. Clad in white and accompanied by a string section, Gaga sang four tracks from the film and musical’s soundtrack ”” “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”

Scarlett Johansson introduced the tribute, which followed John Legend and Common’s moving performance of “Glory” and win for Best Song. Johansson’s transition into discussing the legacy of The Sound of Music was an awkward one, including a comparison of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Selma-to-Montgomery voting-rights march ”” the inspiration for “Glory” and the film Selma ”” to the impact of the musical film. (The march also celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.) The tribute was immediately followed by Julie Andrews presenting the award for Best Original Score to Alexandre Desplat for The Grand Budapest Hotel.

The Sound of Music swept the Oscars the year it was nominated. Winning five statues, including Best Picture and Best Music, the film also garnered nominations for Julie Andrews and Peggy Wood for lead and supporting actress respectively.

In 2013, Carrie Underwood tackled Andrews’ legendary role of Maria in The Sound of Music Live! event. The televised musical event was nominated for four Emmy Awards, winning for its technical direction. Gaga most recently performed at the Grammy Awards this month where her collaborative album with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek, won for Best Traditional Pop Vocal album. Both her Grammy and Oscars appearances were similarly subdued with only tinges of her signature theatricality.
