We recently caught up with American singer and actress Laurissa Romain aka Lala and talked to her about her latest pop track “Love Letters From My Ex.” Read our interview with the artist below.

It’s been two years since we interviewed you for “Barriers” – what have you been up to since then?

The last two years have been a whirlwind! After I released ‘Barriers’ in 2021 I spent the rest of that year finding a sound for myself, I experimented a lot, either going super R&B or super pop, even a disco record. In 2022 I challenged myself to drop a song once a month. I committed to six months on that schedule along with visuals for each song that I was directing, producing, styling, editing and even ended up coloring one of them as well. This year I want to get more intentional and really lock in a sound that feels like me, starting with my latest release titled ‘Love Letters From My Ex.’

What can you tell us about your new song “Love Letters From My Ex?”

‘Love Letters From My Ex’ is a true story about what I was going through at the time, I had someone who wouldn’t stop contacting me and even went as far as emailing and venmoing me. It started as a laugh between my friends and co-creators about times this has also happened to them and turned into what I feel is a personal anthem and an ode to that feeling of finally being free of a situation that used to hold you back and how quickly the tables can turn. With that, it truly is all love I might’ve made a whole song and music video about it but like I say at the end of the song, ‘I do wish you the best, good luck.’

What was it like putting the video together for the song?

When creating the music video for ‘Love Letters From My Ex’ I wanted it to be fun, campy, and feminine! I was super fortunate to have been introduced to my now friend and co-creator, director Sabrina Roberts. She brought ideas to the table I would have never thought of. After months of planning and sending inspo back and forth she brought in executive producer Jagger Corcione and producer Sabrina Alvarez who graciously sourced an incredible 24-person crew who I genuinely could not have done this video without. I also have to note that it was the most women I’ve ever worked with on a set which I am beyond thrilled about specifically for this project it was super empowering to see. I got to edit the video which I always love doing and I knew it was going to be great when I was having trouble choosing between takes. You think you have an idea of what you’re going into on the day and for the most part we did. Everything was so structured and planned out, everyone was in great communication with the game plan and what the final product should look like, but it truly exceeded my expectations on what it became and I am so proud of the video and all the hard work from this crew in pulling it all together.

What’s next?

When we last spoke, in 2021 I had just landed my first soundtrack single on a film, in May I wrapped two new films in which I get to combine my passions for acting and music, portraying a singer and getting to open the movie with one of my original songs as well as having multiple original compositions on each of the scores. One airs this winter on BET and the other will be out next year on Paramount+. I’ve been in the studio a lot lately so you can definitely look forward to some new music from me soon as well as more live performances.
