Bengaluru post rock band Until We Last.

Within two years of forming, Bengaluru post-rock band Until We Last have doubled their set time to reach 90 minutes, something of a requirement for post rock bands, considering their instrumental, psychedelic sound. Fresh from their set on the final day of the Magnetic Fields Festival in Rajasthan, guitarist Ketan Bahirat says they’ve been playing all new material, leaning more toward electronica using loops. In fact, electronica artists at the Magnetic Fields Festival were so impressed by their sound that they approached the band for a possible collaboration, but it’s too early to talk about tells us Bahirat.

At the JD Rock Awards Best Emerging Artist showcase in Bengaluru this month, Until We Last will play a mix of their new and old material including the electro-influenced tracks such as “Revival” and “Light,” from their bootleg CD released earlier this year. Their new sound also includes more audio samples, according to Bahirat, as was evident in their use of the final speech from Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 film The Great Dictator on their track “Illusions.” But there’s more to it than just ripping audio tracks from movies. Says Bahirat, “We’re going to be recording in different places ”“ at home and in studios across Bangalore. We’re recording live samples this time, like putting an amp and a mic on the road to make ambience-based stuff. It’s going to be real ambience, like when [Icelandic post rock band] Sigur Ros put a drum kit in a swimming pool to get good reverb. I mean, we’re not that eclectic, but we want to give it a shot.”

The band will begin recording their as yet untitled eight-track debut album in January. Says Bahirat, “We’re not limiting ourselves to generic post rock. I think everyone in India has now woken up to the genre and we need to get rid of their assumptions that we’re generic.”

Until We Last perform at the Jack Daniel’s Annual Rock Awards Best Emerging Artist Showcase on December 26th at Hard Rock Café, Bengaluru. Event details here.
