Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is known for coaxing surprising and highly-anticipated reunions and its 2016 installment is no exception. As the New York Times reports, LCD Soundsystem will return to the stage during the festival.
Rumors began swirling online last fall about a possible 2016 comeback, but they were shot down by DFA Recordsmanager Kris Peterson in October. “Hey idiots, LCD Soundsystem isn’t reuniting,” DFA Records label manager Petersen tweeted. “They’re dead, along with your good looks and cultural relevance.” DFA cofounder Jonathan Galkin also denied the rumors to Pitchfork. The band’s return was first reported by Consequence of Sound, who cited anonymous “multiple sources” as confirming that the group intended to perform “at least three high-profile music festivals” in the U.S. and U.K., which sparked the initial rumors. The dance-rock group’s surprise Christmas eve release of “Christmas Will Break Your Heart,” its first song in five years, further fueled the reunion chatter. This will be the band’s first performance together since their farewell show in Madison Square Garden in 2011. Over the summer, band leader James Murphy launched a new “subway symphony” campaign and earlier in the year he covered David Bowie’s “Golden Years” for Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young film.
LCD Soundsystem is not the only big get for the California festival. Guns N’ Roses is also reuniting and slated to perform at Coachella. The festival runs the weekends of April 15-17 and April 22-24.
