Legendary Radio Host Ameen Sayani Dies at 91
The presenter passed away due to a heart attack
Ameen Sayani, the iconic radio presenter renowned for his legendary show Binaca Geetmala, passed away at the age of 91. His demise occurred in Mumbai on Tuesday following a heart attack. The news was confirmed by his son, Rajil Sayani, who stated that his father was rushed to HN Reliance Hospital after the heart attack but couldn’t be saved.
Born on December 21st, 1932, in Mumbai, Sayani became a household name with his signature greeting and was instrumental in hosting Binaca Geetmala, which aired from 1952 onwards, initially on Radio Ceylon and later on Vividh Bharati (AIR), spanning over 42 years.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sayani contributed significantly to over 54,000 radio programs and 19,000 spots/jingles since 1951. Additionally, he made appearances in several films, including Bhoot Bungla, Teen Devian, Boxer, and Qatl, usually portraying the role of an announcer.
Tributes poured in from across social media platforms, with fans expressing gratitude for Sayani’s contribution to popularizing All India Radio and reminiscing about the timeless music and memories he provided through Binaca Geetmala. A fan tweeted, “Binaca Geetmala would always remain eternal. Thank you for the music and memories. RIP, Ameen Sayani Saab,” while another wrote, “Have very fond memories of Binaca Geetmala during my childhood… Ameen Sayani was a legend at that time… rest in peace, sir.”
