Listen: Darjeeling Metallers Obliterating Vortex’s Incisive New Song ‘Fractal Perceptions Rectified’

The tech-death metal band's new song follows up their 2015 EP ‘Machineurotic’

If you’re a band in Darjeeling, you can likely go the way of Scandinavian metal bands and find yourself a forest close by for a music video. We saw Sukna-based metallers If Hope Dies do it for their debut EP, and it’s the case for Darjeeling technical death metallers Obliterating Vortex as well.

Their latest single and music video “Fractal Perceptions Rectified” brings together gnashing  guitar combos (a sweet guitar solo thrown in as well at the end by Aditya Darnal) and dexterous, dissonant riffs and melodies (timed to perfectly synchronized windmill headbanging) from the band. Vocalist-guitarist Sailu Rasaily, bassist Abhishek Moktan and drummer Dichen Pakhrin keep things tight throughout. The track was produced, mixed and mastered by If Hope Dies frontman Aakash Sherpa at his studio, Anomaly Sound Designs.

Formed in 2012, Obliterating Vortex have performed all over the North East and East of India, plus a gig in Pokhara, Nepal. Rasaily says gigs are still on and off, but they’ve got a “loyal base of people who have followed” the band, who released their debut EP Machineurotic in 2015.

However, their most immediate challenge remains finding a replacement for drummer Pakhrin, who is moving to Poland for work. Rasaily says, “It’ll be quite a task to find a replacement in such a demanding genre as technical death metal, but we have our fingers crossed and we will be announcing a replacement pretty soon.”
