Guwahati-based brothers Amitabh and Siddharth Barooa can pretty much do it all sitting in the North East ”“ they’ve been regularly recording bands and releasing material with longstanding alt rock/metal band Lucid Recess, which features Amitabh on vocals and bass, while Siddharth handles guitars.
After releasing their third album Alive and Aware late last year, the brothers traded in their guitars for much lighter hues of piano-led pop-rock with their latest project Circlelost. Says Siddharth, “We started working on this and writing songs for this early this year and were ready with a few songs. Mainly, Amitabh wanted to play the piano and I, for a change, wanted to fill in with the bass and that’s basically how it started.”
In May, drummer Nishant Hagjer [from Delhi tech/groove metallers Undying Inc., Guwahati metallers Rectified Spirit and Nepal metallers Underside] was roped in when he came by the studio. Siddharth adds, “We have a great chemistry together. He heard the first two songs and really liked them and wanted to play right away. We recorded both the songs in that same week and that’s how it started.”
The result is a Radiohead-esque track called “None To Wake Us,” haunting with Amitabh’s vocal melodies and piano lines over Hagjer riding the high-hat at lightning speed and Siddharth’s filling in the spaces with low-end bass. There’s two more songs nearly ready to go, with a few more set to be recorded when Hagjer visits Guwahati in September. Siddharth adds, “We wanted to have a very raw/live sound. We all wanted to do something we haven’t done before and this music appealed to all of us and also got us very excited.”
