The Mumbai-based vocalist’s four-track record features songs about love, childhood memories and more
Kolkata-bred singer-songwriter Sayantika Ghosh has been writing songs since the age of 10 mainly because she’s brought up in a musical family. From her great-grandfather being a classical musician to her mother also having learnt classical music and her father being a harmonica player, she says, “It [music] was unavoidable.” After gaining a masters degree in geology from Mumbai’s Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay in 2014, Ghosh decided to take up music full time and is now out with her debut four-track EP, Yesterday Forever, via Mumbai-based label Springboard Records.
The vocalist states that IIT was her ticket to Mumbai and the bustling activity and festivals at the institute appealed to her. “I think IIT inspired me to take this more seriously.” Ghosh jokes, “Of all things, I decided to come to IIT, took up music and left academics.”
Yesterday Forever opens with the R&B leaning “The Memory Remains” which according to the vocalist is about “childhood nostalgia and how things were different and seemed better when we were kids,” while the cinematic “Extraordinary Love” was written by Ghosh as a birthday present for her boyfriend. The musician explains that the electronica jazz infused “Hollow Inside” and the hopeful “Heavenly” both follow a similar lyrical theme. She says, “I am obsessed with the concept of forbidden love and these songs are about that.” The EP was recorded at Mumbai’s Flying Carpet Productions and produced, mixed and mastered by recording engineers Ashish Manchanda and Aman Moroney.
After performing around the country over the last year including a set at Musexpo in Hollywood, California, Ghosh is plotting for more gigs and also a tour to support the EP. With a music video for “The Memory Remains” already out, the vocalist is also lining up clips for “Extraordinary Love” and “Hollow Inside.”
