South Korean singer-songwriter SUNMI, in collaboration with Swedish streaming platform Spotify, has unveiled a groovy single called “Oh Sorry Ya.” Released on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the single falls under the streaming platform’s annual campaign EQUAL, which aims at promoting equity for women in the music industry.
Co-written and produced by SUNMI alongside the musical duo LYRE, “Oh Sorry Ya” brings back the feel-good rhythm of retro-pop with a groovy baseline keeping the ambiance peachy and saucy. “I’d like to say thank u to @LYREMusicGroup. We’ve never seen each other, but we made beautiful music together,” the K-pop star wrote in a tweet. “I look forward to another collab once again someday. Hope everyone enjoys.”
Through her extensive body of work, SUNMI has crafted an image for herself as the go-to K-pop artist for all things retro and “Oh Sorry Ya” smoothly blends into the soloist’s artistic canvas. Further positioning itself as an extension to the storyline crafted on “Borderline” (the last track listed on SUNMI’s August 2021 EP 1/6), the single talks about a push-and-pull relationship that’s doomed to fail. Penned from a woman’s perspective, the track highlights her moment of epiphany when she finally realizes her worth, empowering her to walk away; “Never knew that you’d say, ‘Sorry,’ yeah/ Play me ’til I say, ‘Enough’/ You are running out of time.”
Dubbed as a ‘Spotify Single,’ “Oh Sorry Ya” is accompanied by a short music video that’s on TikTok. In the one-minute cut posted on the vocalist’s official Twitter handle, SUNMI is seen exuding an enigmatic, sensual aura as she embodies each word through her expressions. Reminiscent of her earlier work “Tail,” SUNMI’s choreographed routines include burlesque-inspired moves performed against a neon-lit set.
Late last year, SUNMI alongside Korean-American rapper-songwriter, JESSI lent their vocals Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers” as featuring artists. This project was succeeded by the single “Go or Stop”, EP 1/6 and singles album TAIL. Aside from her musical endeavors, SUNMI was the judge on Mnet’s idol-reality television show Girls Planet 999, which led to the formation of the K-pop rookie girl group, Kep1er.
