Indian indie has never had it so good on national television. The Dewarists on Star World, MTV Roots and Coke Studio@MTV, and now Live From The Console gets its own show on the recently launched music channel 9XO. The channel has just inked a deal with Day 1 (Sony Music Independent) and Oranjuice Entertainment’s fortnightly indie event Live From The Console. The indie event will be aired as a one-hour rockumentary format show on the channel sometime this year.

“We’re thrilled to partner with 9XO to promote musicians and independent music on a national level,” says Shridhar Subramaniam, president, Sony Music Entertainment India and Middle East.

The team from 9XO will be shooting this week’s Live From The Console, on May 26th which will feature singer/songwriter Harbour Light, alt-rock acts Stella by Starlight and The Ungulates.

Though the channel is still unclear when the show will go on air, Luke Kenny Programming Head for 9XO said the idea of the show is to promote previously unheard talent. “This association with the event will bring to the fore talented artists playing original music and give them the national recognition that their music merits.”

Oranjuice Entertainment MD Owen Roncon adds, “We are sure thousands of people will be able to appreciate indie artists and their music.” Goddess Gagged frontman Siddharth Basrur believes that any promotion on TV helps. “I was very surprised to know that people saw us on television,” says Basrur, who has appeared both on MTV Roots and played at Live From The Console with his band Goddess Gagged. “I didn’t think people would watch the show at all and who listens to indie anyway right? But my family members who saw us on TV and people on the roads now know who and what Goddess Gagged is.” Basrur reasons that watching a band on TV is akin to playing a debut gig. “Twenty people come for a show and tell 20 others who come for your next show. People see you once on TV and that helps in spreading the word.”

Previous LFTC events have featured bands and acts like Spud In The Box, The Mavyns, Bones For Bertie, Seti X and Voctronica.
