The track is off the Meghalaya musician’s forthcoming debut EP ‘Magical Elixir’
Born just outside of Shillong in Meghalaya in a village called Mawten, Mawkyrwat, guitar virtuoso and singer Liza Lyngdoh was mesmerized when she heard one of her teachers play the piano at church while attending KJP Girls Higher Secondary School in Shillong. Lyngdoh says, “I always look forward to getting a chance to hear her play. Her sound was so beautiful and captivating that it has left me wanting more and that has created a strong interest for me in music.” Since Lyngdoh found it difficult to get her hands on a piano or keyboard, she instead settled for an old guitar that was laying around her school hostel where she boarded. “I fell in love with it and have never stopped since then,” she says.
Although Lyngdoh has released music with her previous bands, she’s now branched out as a solo artist and has just put out her debut single, the soaring “COLD,” off her upcoming four-track EP Magical Elixir. The new song includes some stellar fretwork by Lyngdoh as well as her crisp vocals. Overall, the track includes elements of heavy metal, prog rock and even a stirring guitar solo. Talking about the track, she says, “I write lyrics based on my life experience and this is one of them.”
The musician has also released a video to accompany the song in which she’s seen performing the track in various looks. In the clip, Lyngdoh sports a red and white outfit as an ode to the late American guitar great Eddie Van Halen as he wears those same colors during his famous performance of “Eruption.” The singer-guitarist says, “He is one of my favorite guitar players.” On putting the video together, Lyngdoh adds, “It was tough, really hard for me because I’m very shy. But somehow I did it, thanks to the director and my kind friends at Wire Up, Bengaluru who let me shoot there with no hesitation at all.”
The songs on the forthcoming Magical Elixir are tracks that Lyngdoh began writing while she was in school. She says, “I’ve named it Magical Elixir in reference to music being a very magical element in my life, almost like a tonic that I couldn’t live without.” The rest of the EP is due to be released in the coming weeks.
