Lucas will perform at the Cherry Blossom Festival and promises an amazing time. 'I can't wait to meet as many of you as possible and feel that incredible connection in person!'
Lucas says, “I’m a people person! I thrive on meaningful connections with those around me.” He embodies the essence of K-pop stardom; however, behind that image, he’s a homey personality. “At home, I keep things cozy and relaxed, often experimenting in the kitchen while imagining all the wonderful moments to come. Sometimes, I take long walks along the Han River, dreaming about the inspiring experiences that await me.”
Some challenges have affected Lucas’ credibility over time, but it seems he may have found things meaningful within them. It shows in his responses to the questions I shared with him lately. He comes across as collected and humble, an artist who’s focused on the future rather than dwelling on the past. “These times have reinforced the importance of self-trust and resilience. Let’s embrace these changes together and move forward.”
The SuperM member returned this year with a solo debut single album, Renegade—a solid and clear statement he put into his music. Even better is that he’s performing for us at Shillong’s Cherry Blossom Festival (November 15 and 16), adding to an impressive list of artists—Akon, Clean Bandit, Boney M, R3hab, and more.
A few days preceding the show, Lucas joins in for this quick Q&A. Musing on the emotions he must be experiencing in the lead-up to the event, he says, “The Cherry Blossom Festival in India truly captivates me with its vibrant energy and stunning beauty. It symbolizes renewal and cultural celebration, bringing people together to appreciate art, music, and the rich traditions unique to this region. I’m particularly eager to experience the warmth of the community as we celebrate this breathtaking festival together.”
Visiting India is a first for him, and he’s raring to connect with his Indian fans, specifically meeting them in person. A love of travel and archiving appears to be the defining characteristics of his artistic journey. That also plays a role in his creative workflow and engagement with the audience. “I truly enjoy vlogging—it’s a wonderful way to connect with my fans and share my adventures. I also love exploring new places, indulging in diverse cuisines, and immersing myself in local cultures during my travels.”
So, what immediately springs to mind when you think of India? “The first thing that comes to mind is curry, which is one of my all-time favorite dishes. I’m eager to savor traditional Indian curry during my visit. I’m eager to dive into the rich tapestry of Indian cuisine—the flavors are truly captivating. I also have a deep appreciation for Indian art and traditions, and I look forward to visiting museums that showcase the beauty of your culture.”
Lucas, I realize, is constantly exploring while pursuing his emotional discoveries. His visit to India rings like an uplifting process: “I am incredibly grateful for the overwhelming love and support from my fans in India! Your energy inspires me every day, and I can’t wait to perform for you. It’s a dream come true to share my music with you all, and I hope to create unforgettable memories together.” It catches something much more than his music and performance—it’s about every moment of being himself, the star, and the person that he is—and sharing that with others.
Lucas’ story exemplifies how someone can overcome cultural divides and be a representation of himself in the idol world. He’s of Chinese-Thai descent, speaks Cantonese, learned other languages for his debut, and has had an eventful career since then. From days of group activities to his solo debut, I believe he has stood for diversity and inclusion while remaining true to himself. Also, as he puts it, he’s “passionate,” “adventurous,” and “creative,” traits that “manifest in my music as I pour my heart into each track and constantly seek to push creative boundaries.”
That’s also relevant when it comes to his creative synergies; he looks for artists who are willing to push those boundaries and explore fresh ideas. In terms of the prospect of working with an Indian artist, Lucas hardly restrains his excitement: “The wealth of talent in India excites me, and I can definitely see myself collaborating with an Indian artist who shares that spirit. I’m inspired by so many unique sounds and styles here, and I’m eager to create something that blends our cultures. There’s so much we can innovate together!”
Currently, the 25-year-old rapper-singer-dancer is setting out on a new journey bursting with promise, to show more of what he’s got while tapping into what motivates him most, the “energy and affection from fans who passionately support my music and fuel my creativity.” For him, it’s more akin to a personal, special emotional connection over everything else, and his time in India can only serve to deepen the connection between him and his fans.
Lucas has lots to say through his music—music he truly believes in. “I have some incredibly exciting projects on the horizon! I’m diving into new music that not only explores different genres but also tells deeper stories that resonate with listeners. Collaborations with some extraordinary artists are in the works, and I can’t wait to fuse our styles to create something truly special. This new chapter is all about innovation and heartfelt expression, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you all very soon.”
