Madlib Recruits Black Thought and Your Old Droog for New Song ‘Reekyod’

"This piece is high art," the Roots rapper says of renowned producer's first single since 2021

Renowned Hip-Hop producer Madlib enlists Black Thought and Your Old Droog for his new track “Reekyod,” the producer’s first single in three years.

Over a crackling, D.O.C.-sampling beat crafted by Madlib, the two rappers showcase their lyrical prowess. “Everything I spit, shine/Imma get mine, regardless,” Droog proclaims on his verse.

“This is strictly for the honorees,” Black Thought said of the collaboration in a statement. “Madlib is in his bag per usual and YOD is more than a force to be reckoned with. Simply complex, this piece is high art. Triple threat. Instant classique.”

Your Old Droog added, “It’s an honor to be inducted into the heavyweight class of hip-hop. To be able to spar with one of the greatest MCs on a beat by the greatest producer is a dream come true.” The rapper also hinted, “Look out for the Madlib x YOD album coming soon.”

“Reekyod” marks Madlib’s first release on his own new label Madlib Invazion, and the first Madlib single since the rapper-producer dropped his Sound Ancestors album in 2021.

This year marks a pair of milestone anniversaries for Madlib as 2024 serves as the 20th birthday for his and the late MF Doom’s classic 2004 LP Madvillainy, as well as the 10th anniversary of his beloved Piñata album with Freddie Gibbs. To celebrate the latter, Madlib and Gibbs have lined up a handful of May concerts to fete that 2014 album.
