Composed of members Solar and Moonbyul, Mamamoo+ is the first sub-unit to be formed under the Mamamoo banner
As the world prepares to bid summer farewell, Mamamoo’s Solar and Moonbyul have breathed life into the season’s breezy feel with their latest release “Better.” Performed alongside H1GHR Music’s rapper BIG Naughty, the song marks the duo’s first single as an official sub-unit, Mamamoo+.
Written by Oneus’s Ravn, Oneway and BIG Naughty, the minimalist R&B track swirls in honeyed melodies with both vocalist Solar and Mamamoo’s rapper Moonbyul employing contrasting vocal styles, creating a delightful listening experience. Rapper BIG Naughty sets aside his established persona as a dynamic rapper as he effortlessly slips into the role of a melodic one to maintain the track’s bright atmosphere. Though the production steers away from usual upbeat pop compositions, the irresistible laid-back approach is a refreshing change of scenery for K-pop fans.
Lyrically, “Better” is a heart warming track celebrating love and companionship; “If I have you, I don’t need to go far/ Everybody’s doing something/ But I’m not jealous because/ You take me away.” The song further traces the effects of a dizzying romantic tale; one which stems from passion, warmth and comfort; “Am I drunk on you or what/ Don’t know what but I feel good, why?/ No need to do anything, no need to add lies/ Already maximum level, overflows.”
The music video follows Moonbyul and Solar, as they embark on a rejuvenating road trip. While taking the road less traveled, the girls bump into BIG Naughty, who’s walking alongside the path. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, Moonbyul and Solar agree to drop the stranger at his destination. What follows the trio next is a series of wholesome memories created at an amusement park, right before the Mamamoo members drop BIG Naughty off.
This has been a busy year so far for both Mamamoo and BIG Naughty. While BIG Naughty released his sophomore EP Nangman, Mamamoo members Whee in, Solar and Moonbyul shared a piece of their artistry in their EPs Whee, Lunatic and Face respectively. On the other hand, Mamamoo’s fourth member Hwa Sa recently collaborated with AOMG’s Loco on the single’s album, Somebody.
