South Korean group MAMAMOO’s leader Solar finally made her solo debut earlier today with the fiery new single “Spit It Out.” Following Wheein, Hwasa and Moonbyul, Solar is the final member of MAMAMOO to kick-start a solo career in addition to the group’s massive discography.

Co-written by Solar and producer Kim Dohoon (who also produced the single in collaboration with veteran rapper Sleepy), “Spit It Out” is a fearless track about self-confidence and success. Solar expresses pride in herself for becoming a successful artist who many people listen to and cherish. She takes her haters apart, assuring them that nothing they do will come in the way of her climbing to the very top. The vocalist addresses how female celebrities are criticised more often than male ones but is determined to continue to rise despite the path being tougher for her, “50/50 I always get on the chopping board/Because I’m a woman, I don’t care, my way/Because I love me, there’s nothing to curse.” In terms of sound, “Spit It Out” explores a dark pop and Latin pop blend, keeping the bass and percussion toned down to highlight Solar’s exceptional vocal range.

The music video for “Spit It Out” (produced by ZanyBros) is a choreography-focused visual treat. Dressed various in high fashion looks, Solar shifts from one vibrant scene to another, accompanied by a litany of dancers dressed identical to her. Highlight moments include some super in-sync tutting Solar and her dancers engage in right at the start, the iconic scene of a bald Solar sitting under a delicate veil and the final scene where the vocalist nonchalantly sets fire to a luxury car behind her–presumably the same one she was sitting on earlier in the video. Solar had showcased her bald look last week on social media, shocking and delighting fans in equal measure with her penchant for experimentation.
