MAMAMOO’s Moonbyul Channels Old School Pop in ‘G999’

Featuring South Korean rapper, Mirani, the single is Moonbyul’s first pre-release from her upcoming album, ‘6equence’

Dec 13, 2021

Rapper-songwriter and singer, Moonbyul of MAMAMOO brings back the spirit of the ‘80s dance-pop in her latest release, “G999.”

Featuring rapper Mirani, the single is an ode to the feel-good era of groovy dance-pop, delivered in Moonbyul and Mirani’s unique vocal performances. The earworming concoction of a pulsating percussion arrangement with funky guitar riffs and synth creates a mix of sounds that is heavy on nostalgia, instantly becoming a favorite for those whose heart lies in the golden era of ‘80s and ‘90s pop music.

Co-written by Moonbyul and Mirani, “G999” is a declaration of love coming from a place of honesty and freshness: “I become light when I looked at you/ I’m running out of oxygеn but I’m not alien/ As if you’re pulling me down It just movе/ I’m being dragged by gravity right now what.” Wanting to unapologetically express the depths of the affection they possess, Moonbyul and Mirani utilize cosmic metaphors to describe the intensity and power of true love: “A hideout just for the two of us in G-9-9-9.”

Moonbyul puts forward a well-rounded performance, displaying a strong grasp over her art as she switches between delectable vocalization and melodic rap performances effortlessly. Given her solid body of work with MAMAMOO over the past seven years, the switch comes almost naturally to the rapper-singer, narrating the tale of an artist who is not only confident in her art but isn’t afraid to explore the horizons of her artistry entirely. On the other hand, Mirani plays her prowess exceptionally, balancing the flavor and mood of the track with her zesty rap delivery.

After nearly two years, Moonbyul is all set to release her solo album. Scheduled to release in January 2022, the rapper-singer’s third EP 6equence, will be preceded by pre-release singles to give the audience a sonic sense of the EP’s direction. With the first one (“G999”) already out, fans can expect to hear from Moonbyul again on December 30th, this time alongside South Korean singer-songwriter Seori.
