MAMAMOO’s Solar is Bold and Confident in ‘Honey’

Accompanied by a music video, the single serves as the lead track off the singer-songwriter's latest EP '容 : FACE'

MAMAMOO’s leader Solar has made a mesmerizing comeback as a solo artist with “Honey.” The lead track off her EP 容 : FACE comes roughly two years after the release of her solo debut single “Spit It Out.”

Co-written and composed by the vocalist, “Honey” is a chill house track with rhythmic bass synth and a groovy hook that complements Solar’s breathy vocalizations admirably. The single opens on a somber note with a tuneful music box-inspired instrumentalization. This atmosphere slowly dissolves to welcome full, rounded bass synth sounds with Solar singing in an ever-so raspy, lower vocal range: “Are you a bit attracted to me?/ (What’s the point of saying it?)/ You just have to answer it/ (Just do, do, do, do, do it).”

Exuding confidence, Solar’s “Honey” is an unapologetic self-love anthem, which sees the vocalist celebrate every aspect of her personality that makes her irresistible. Taking charge of the narrative, the vocalist playfully centers the story around her, presenting herself as a catch one wouldn’t dare miss out on; “Everyone looks at me and their eyes are like honey/ Watch out for all the fish you’ve caught/ You’re going to get hurt seriously/ Don’t rush too early, oh.”

The music video introduces us to Solar’s alter egos. Each denoted by a specific color, we get to see her various ‘faces’ — be it the cut-throat, suave woman in an avant-garde gown, or the bubbly, cheerful side of her drenched in yellow. Each character and accompanying expression on her face reflects the mood and connotation the color entails. It’s a fitting concept for a song that discusses what makes Solar loved by everyone.

Earlier this month, as part of the promotions for her latest EP, Solar unveiled an intriguing trailer titled Face My Persona. Brimming with eerie background music, the trailer showed the vocalist releasing pent-up anger as she smashes an unknown object with a hammer.

Solar’s first solo EP  容 : FACE comes two years after the release of her solo debut single “Spit It Out.” Lead by “Honey,” the remaining tracks on the EP include “RAW,” ”chap chap,” “Big Booty,” and “zinggle zinggle.”
