The three-track record includes soaring vocals, heavy distortion, punchy drums and more

Mangaluru hard-rock band Sounds Fishy came together in 2016 and found their feet playing a number of band competitions and emerged as winners numerous times. They went on to release a few singles since then and now now, the group – comprising drummer Ashwin Sequeira, bassist Floid Pereira, keyboardist Maclean D’Souza, guitarists Clyde Lobo and Ramprasad Ashok as well as vocalist Renston Fernandes – are out with their three-track debut EP, Retribution.

Work on Retribution began in 2019 and it was initially slated to be a full-length album. However, D’Souza says, “That didn’t work out as expected due to the pandemic.” Fast forward to 2022 and the band grew keen to release a body of work in the shape of a record. “As the New Year began, so did our production process. All in all, the EP took a couple of months to be produced,” D’Souza shares.

According to the band, the EP is loosely based on the seven deadly sins, and the record’s title is meant to define overcoming these sins. Retribution opens with a fiery riff, which kicks off the first track “Hail the Courtesan.” D’Souza explains, “The song symbolizes greed and how it makes us do unimaginable things, and finally consumes us.” On the six-minute “Kill My Pain,” the band displays a plethora of crafty instrumentation and dynamism while Fernandes sings about “the fight against our nightmares, and the fight for our dreams and aspirations.” On The EP closer “Of God and Men,” Sounds Fishy turn up the dial with growls and solos. D’Souza says, “This track is based on the pride of humans that gives us a false sense or illusion of being immortal or godlike.” Retribution was produced and recorded at D’Souza’s Mac Studios, and the keyboardist even mixed and mastered the EP.

With plenty of unreleased material in their locker, the band are keen to release more music soon and write more tunes. “What we love more than writing songs is performing them live. We can’t wait to get back on stage and play these live,” says D’Souza.
