Songs like ‘Chehra, ‘Dooriyan’ and ‘Move’ goes all in on electro-pop
Pop artist Mansheel Gujral’s new EP Move (also written as मove) has had a wide audience – the singer behind Bollywood songs like “Channa Ve” and “Humsafar” says she’s seen videos of children dancing to “Chehra” with stuffed animal toys, long-distance couples sharing “Dooriyan” and the title track “Move” becoming a dancefloor favorite among fans.
“The love I am getting just makes my heart happy,” Gujral says in an email interview. The intent behind releasing her debut EP after years of being known as the voice who gained fame on reality music shows and then in Bollywood was to make a simple point, one that’s evident in the choice of the EP title. “There is no time like the present to make your moves,” she says.
Working with producers like Harshit Jain and Aditya Vashisht across three songs, Gujral says she’d been “itching to create something with smooth, groove-heavy beats, deep basslines, and the pulsing energy of house music.” She taps lyricist Geet Sagar as co-writer and brings in American desi artist Jeffrey Iqbal for the title track. Gujral adds, “The EP is all about boldness: bold sounds, bold themes, bold choices, it’s unapologetically me. Playing it safe wasn’t even an option. Doing it my way felt true to the spirit of the music, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”
While there’s still a music video in the works for the title song, Gujral has released videos for “Chehra” (in October) and “Dooriyan” (in July). While the former offers a more cozy and carefree look at Gujral indoors, “Dooriyan” was shot in the wee hours in Mumbai, aiming to capture the city in the quiet of the night. Gujral says, “We shot in places that truly capture the essence of the city: skywalks, railway platforms, and even at the break of dawn, with the Queen’s Necklace sparkling behind us. That 5 AM view? Pure magic. It felt like Bombay wasn’t just a location in the video; it was a character in its own right.”
There has been a bit of prep going into the “Move” music video as well which completes the visual side of the three-track EP. “I’ve been gearing up for this video for a while now. It’s going to be high energy, big bright lights, and a whole lot of dancing,” Gujral says.
With the dancefloor-friendly offering out now, Gujral hints that while she loves working on electro-pop, her next solo release will be in another sonic direction. “I’ll always have a soft spot for love ballads. They’re timeless, and I know my listeners connect with them in such a special way. I’ve also got an exciting collaboration in the works that blends some unique styles in a way I think fans are going to love,” she adds.
