Mark Tuan Returns With the Emotional ‘Last Breath’

Taiwanese-American singer-songwriter and producer Mark Tuan seeks to heal from a toxic relationship in his latest release, “Last Breath.”

Co-written by Tuan alongside lilspirit and OVRCZ, “Last Breath” sees the singer share his frustrations about being in a suffocating relationship; “I can’t hold it back, I’m suffocatin’/ You’rе controllin’ me and I can’t escape, oh no/ I wish I would’ve known about your evil plans/ Keep fallin’ for these childish games.” Tuan creates a sense of urgency and hopelessness, all while explaining the trials of walking on eggshells. The strangulation is further enhanced by Tuan’s desire to breathe in peace– a mundane action for many, Tuan views it as some sort of elixir. 

The messaging of the track remains universal. Without dwelling much on the nature of the relationship, the track communicates the trials and tribulations of anyone who finds themselves in a suffocating relationship of any nature– be it romantic or platonic. 

“Last Breath” stitches Tuan’s breathy vocal delivery with a rhythmic hip-hop base. The track opens with a light echo of a bass guitar which later evolves and presents itself with a mix of synth. As the video concludes, Tuan cues in an instrumental outro presented as a blend of soft guitar riffs, orchestral piano notes and synth, creating a melancholic ending. 

In many ways, the music video communicates the sentiments in a cinematic approach with Tuan embarking on a cross-country journey. Driving alone on an empty highway, Tuan seems pensive, making several stops along the road. While the destination seems unknown, Tuan continues driving before jolting up from a bathtub, soaked. 

Tuan rose to fame as the rapper of the K-pop group, GOT7. Post the group’s departure from their label JYP Entertainment this January, Tuan returned to his hometown of Los Angeles and signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to expand his digital footprint in the United States. Since then, Tuan has opened his official YouTube account, collaborated with Bangladeshi-American producer Sanjoy on “One In A Million” and featured on Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings: The Album alongside Korean R&B vocalist BIBI on “Never Gonna Come Down.”
