Mary Ann Alexander Wants A Love like A$AP Rocky and Rihanna on ‘Bling Bling’
Bengaluru-based artist traverses chill pop and R&B with a bit of rap on her new song
Singer-songwriter and DJ Mary Ann Alexander dreams up a perfect kind of love on her buoyant new song “Bling Bling,” produced by Amrith Raghunathan aka Doc.Awes from the neo hip-hop group Till Apes and co-produced by Ashwin Hiran.
Singing about turning on the charm for a man, the R&B artist writes “Bling Bling” from the perspective of a woman who’s feeling good. Still, there’s a bit of hesitancy. She sings, “Honestly, I don’t know if I even want ya/I know I like the way you make me feel.”
The artist says in a press release for the song, “The allure of shiny things and the thrill of a transformed life bring a rush of excitement and satisfaction. This song serves as a manifestation of her aspirations, showcasing how these tangible symbols of success elevate her sense of self and quality of life, even if they are still on the horizon.”
Mixed with R&B, hip-hop and pop influences, she even goes on to idealize herself, laying down flaws and all on the line. She sings, “If I had a twin would you still choose me? I would love me an A$AP x Riri/I got the spirit, I’m far from shy/Surprised you still wanna ride/After the things that I said.”
There’s “emotional turbulence” along with the charm that Alexander brings on the track. A press release adds, “The flood of attention and the chaos of her evolving world leave her feeling scattered and confused about love and connections.” Described as an “introspective, stream-of-consciousness lyrical style,” the artist has shared her “struggle to balance the transient nature of romantic relationships with the unwavering passion she has for her career” on “Bling Bling.”
Working with Raghunathan, Alexander previously hopped on to his band Till Apes’ track “Sit Back” earlier this year. It marked the first of new music from her after 2022’s “In My Zone”
