After being announced and called off last year last year following the death of Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray, the yearly gig series Metal at the Tavern is finally slated to kick off this September in Mumbai. The 2012 edition of Metal at the Tavern in November, which promised Bengaluru stoner/doom band Bevar Sea as headliner, has Mumbai extreme metal band Demonic Resurrection, Pune thrash/groove metal band Halahkuh, Bengaluru drone/doom band Djinn & Miskatonic and Mumbai acts such as heavy metallers Albatross, death metal band Atmosfear, black metal band Solar Deity and hard rock/heavy metal band Hellwind on the bill this year.

Metal at the Tavern is being organized by Albatross’s Dasgupta along with Nitin Rajan, former vocalist of death metal band Morticide and founder of the annual death metal gig series Domination: The Deathfest [which was revived earlier this year]. Says Dasgupta, “Metal at the Tavern is like an Albatross and friends gig, almost a Resurrection [The extreme metal series started by Demonic Resurrection in 2004, which last took place in 2009] of sorts.”

While Demonic Resurrection plays in Mumbai for the first time in over a year [their last gig was as part of the Road to Bloodstock show at Blue Frog, Mumbai in June 2012], Metal at the Tavern will also serve as a launch gig for two new releases ”“ Solar Deity, with their third EP, Devil Worship and Djinn & Miskatonic, who make their Mumbai debut, launch their debut EP, tentatively titled Forever in the Realm. Kolkata thrash metallers Mortar were due to make their Mumbai debut at the gig, but they pulled out last week citing lineup changes as the issue. Thrash/groove metallers Halahkuh [who were also due to play at Metal at the Tavern last year], have been confirmed as replacements.

The gig will be Albatross’s warm-up gig to their three-city tour of Australia in October [the band premieres a new song titled “Children of the Cloud” at the show]. While Dasgupta intended to debut his death metal sideproject Primitiv [which he says deals with “social issues plaguing people of the stone age” such as man-eating plants to dinosaurs], the bassist was unable to recruit members for the project. Mumbai death metallers Atmosfear will replace Primitiv at the gig.
