Metallica have tapped Nimród Antal, the director of Predators and Vacancy, to helm their first 3D live concert movie. The film, which will blend documentary and concert footage, is set to shoot in August, with a theatrical release in 2013.

“I’ve been a fan of Nimróds since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away,” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said in a statement. “I’ve watched with excitement as his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years.  Within five minutes of meeting him I was addicted to his enthusiasm, his take on the creative process and his ‘thinking outside of the box’ personality.”

Antal is clearly psyched to be working with the band. “Metallica has always been a huge part of my life, and it’s an incredible opportunity when we get to work with our heroes,” he said. “We are going to harness the powerful and almighty energy of Metallica’s live shows, inject a narrative into it, and shoot it in 3D to elevate the entire experience.”

Metallica’s previous film, the documentary Some Kind of Monster by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, went behind the scenes as the band entered group therapy in order to get through the process of recording their 2003 album St. Anger.
