See Michael C. Hall’s Stunning Performance of David Bowie’s ‘Lazarus’

Actor sings tune during 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize ceremony

Actor Michael C. Hall paid proper homage to David Bowie during his performance of Bowie’s “Lazarus” at the 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize ceremony on Thursday.

Backed by a full band, which included backup singers and a horn section, the former Dexter leading man channeled the late singer’s intonations while adding his own take to the original version. Hall’s emotive performance took place before a video backdrop featuring Bowie.

Of course, Hall has had a lot of solid practice embodying Bowie’s sound and style. Hall worked with Bowie on the musical Lazarus, one of the last projects Bowie finished before his death. Hall starred in the leading role of the off-Broadway New York production. The actor will be reprising the role when it heads to London in October.

The song hails from David Bowie’s Mercury-nominated Blackstar, which lost out to Skepta for his album Konnichiwa on Thursday.

“Rest in peace, David Bowie,” Skepta said during his acceptance speech for the prize.

In June, Hall also sang Bowie’s “Changes” during the CFDA Awards, but he’s recently paid homage to other artists as well. Earlier in the year he performed a musical tribute to Radiohead.

David Bowie’s final studio recordings will feature on the ‘Lazarus Cast Album.’ Watch here.
