Teller will take on the leading role originally played by Richard Gere in 1982
Miles Teller is set to star in an updated version of the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman, Deadline reported on Friday.
Richard Gere starred in the original version of the movie, playing a young naval officer set to begin his training. The film ended up earning six Academy Award nominations; “Up Where We Belong” would go on to win Best Original Song, while Louis Gossett Jr. nabbed Best Supporting Actor. Debra Winger earned her first nomination for Best Actress, but lost out to Meryl Streep for her performance in Sophie’s Choice.
Dana Fox, who co-wrote the 2021 101 Dalmatians origin story Cruella along with 2022’s The Lost City, wrote the script for the remake, and Temple Hill is producing the picture, per Deadline. The remake serves as Teller’s latest film under Paramount after he co-starred alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, one of the top-grossing films of the 2020s.
Teller first broke into the mainstream for his leading performance in the 2014 music drama Whiplash alongside J.K. Simmons, who played his abusive music instructor. The An Officer and a Gentleman reboot isn’t the only high-profile role Teller’s got in the pipeline. He’s also set to play Michael Jackson’s longtime lawyer John Branca in the much anticipated biopic Michael, which will come out in April 2025. Branca, the co-executor of Jackson’s estate, also served as a co-producer on the film.
Teller will also feature in the upcoming Apple TV film The Gorge, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Sigourney Weaver, and the A24 film Eternity with Elizabeth Olsen — both projects have yet to get a release date.
