Pop star shoots portraits of transgender and gender expansive individuals for Instagram partnership
Miley Cyrus and Happy Hippie Foundation have partnered with Instagram to launch ‘InstaPride,’ a new campaign that celebrates transgender individuals.
Miley Cyrus has launched a new campaign to help promote her Happy Hippie Foundation. The singer and philanthropist is partnering with Instagram on ‘InstaPride,’ which will celebrate transgender and “gender expansive” individuals on the photo sharing app.
InstaPride launched Monday on the platform with 19-year-old film student Leo Sheng, who has been documenting his transition. “The most obvious theme of my page is my transition from female to male,” Sheng wrote in an Instagram blog post. “For me, a picture really does say a thousand words.” Sheng noted that the photo shoot was run and shot by Cyrus herself and that the post also gave space for the student to details his experience with his own self-image.
“I used to be afraid to share photos that I took, let alone pictures of myself from any period of my life,” Sheng wrote. “But, I’ve learned how powerful sharing can be whether it’s your story or just something that means a lot to you. My photos mean a lot to me ”” all of them. I share them without apologies. I love to see how far I’ve come and what I’ve accomplished. If there’s anything that the last few years have taught me, it’s that living an unapologetic existence is the most freeing thing you can do. ”
InstaPride will run for two weeks and follows the success of Cyrus’ partnership with Facebook which featured Cyrus and her friends performing covers of classic songs in her backyard. Joan Jett, Ariana Grande and Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace were just a few guests featured over the course of the Backyard Sessions, which also helped raise awareness for Happy Hippie Foundation.
The foundation’s goal is to aid homeless youth, especially more vulnerable populations such as the LGBT youth community.
