Millie Bobby Brown Wants to Play Britney Spears, But ‘That’s Her Story’
“I mean, she is an absolute icon,” said the Stranger Things star
Millie Bobby Brown as Britney Spears? The Stranger Things actress is down! In a new interview with Access Hollywood Monday, Brown reiterated her desire to play the legendary pop star in a future biopic.
“I mean, you know, she is an absolute icon,” Brown said. “I would love nothing more than to be a part of her story. But that’s her story, and I am in full support of her bringing her story to life… how she wants to.”
“I would want someone to bring it to life in the most beautiful way, and I’d always be open to that,” she added.
Brown previously told Drew Barrymore that she’s always wanted to “play a real person” and that the singer’s story “resonates” with her. “Just growing up in the public eye watching her videos, watching interviews of how when she was younger. I mean, same thing with you,” she said at the time. “I don’t know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way and hers only.”
Brown’s new comments come a year after Jon M. Chu confirmed he’s set to direct the biopic on Spears. “I really can’t talk about that yet,” he told Billboard, before adding, “I’m a big fan of Britney. I’ve been a fan since I was young and she was young and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium.”
“So I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we’ll see. We’re developing it now and it’s a long road ahead,” he added.
Last August, Spears shared her excitement for working with Marc Platt as a producer on the film based on her memoir, The Woman in Me. It was later reported that Chu would also be attached to the project at Universal Pictures.
Brown isn’t the first person to put her name in the hat to play the singer: In August 2024, Emma Roberts addressed rumors that she was being cast to play her. “I was like, ‘I love her assistant,’” Roberts told Cosmopolitan. “I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears. It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.’”
And in November, Addison Rae — who’s a huge Spears fan — told iHeartRadio that she doesn’t “think anyone deserves to play her.” She said, “I think she really, really created something that is untouchable and so in its own lane that nobody will ever truly be able to replicate what she did for music, and even the entertainment industry.”
