Moby Leads Wayne Coyne to ‘The Perfect Life’ ”“ Premiere

Mariachis and rollerskating ghosts seek bliss in Los Angeles

Moby and Wayne Coyne have officially released the highly anticipated video for “The Perfect Life.” The collaboration track will appear on Moby’s upcoming LP, Innocents, out on September 30th. After a teaser video last week and a casting call on Moby’s Facebook, it was possible to get the gist of what this work of art might look like. The casting call requested the following: “S&M gimp rhythmic gymnast,” “eight roller-skating ghosts,” “12 goth choir members,” “2 obese bearded bikers in red speedos,” “a punk rock brass brand” and “a drunk king: guy with beard age 35-50.”

The track starts with a choir of voices singing “the perfect life is all we need,” which is continously repeated throughout the song as a glorious and uplifting anthem. Moby and Coyne are dressed as mariachis who lead a group of strangers of all forms (the king and some rollerskating ghosts) throughout L.A. to their final destination of a rooftop celebration. It’s about acceptance and giving love to those who welcome it.

“Wayne Coyne and I ended up doing a duet on ”˜The Perfect Life’: we sing the choruses together, and then go back and forth on the verses,” Moby said. “Wayne and I first met in 1995, when the Flaming Lips and I were both opening up for a Red Hot Chili Peppers’ European tour. We became friends, shared a dressing room and the same bad craft services, and watched the Chili Peppers from the side of the stage. I thought of Wayne for this song because the Flaming Lips have evolved in this very open, celebratory band when they play live, and that was the perfect vibe for what I was imagining for ”˜The Perfect Life.’ I texted Wayne and said, ”˜Hey, I have a song ”“ want to sing on it?’ Thirty seconds later, he texted me back: ”˜Yes, send it to me, it will be great.’”

Innocents is the first record that Moby has worked on with an outside producer, Mike “Spike” Stent ”“ known for his work with Madonna, U2, and Massive Attack. The album also includes collaborations with Mark Lanegan, Cold Specks and Skylar Grey. Moby recently announced three shows at the Fonda Theatre in L.A on October 2nd, 3rd, 4th; tickets are available here.
