MONSTA X Embraces the Glamour of Disco in ‘You Problem’

The single leads the group's second English album The Dreaming

K-pop hit masters Monsta X tap into the essence of disco-pop in their latest release “You Problem.”

The groovy dance-pop release draws its inspiration from the golden era of ‘80s disco, heightened by rhythmic synth-beats and pulsing guitar riffs. The overall funky composition underlines the group’s unique vocal colors, suiting the retro route it has taken—a fitting genre to solidify and expand Monsta X’s name in the US market. Contrary to the usual mix of rap and vocal performances, “You Problem” emphasizes Monsta X’s vocal mastery and ability to switch in and out of their comfort zones to deliver a fresh soundscape with every release.

On the lyrical front, “You Problem” describes a playful equation between two individuals in love. It gives the perspective of a man waiting for his paramour to accept his love; “I told you I’m your man/ I’m only here for your love, I don’t need no plan about us/ It’s simple, get lost in a romance/ And just dance, baby, let’s just dance.” While Monsta X exhibits a stellar vocal performance (especially the group’s rapper, I.M who mesmerizes listeners with his dreamy vocal performance), the single’s allure is elevated thanks to the unique vocal melodies of the dynamic duo, Kihyun and Joohoney.

Monsta X keeps the music video spirited with each member taking up various roles in a bowling alley. With choreography being one of the strengths in the group’s arsenal, Monsta X supports the groovy flow of the chorus with suave, swaggy dance moves to match the track’s disco appeal.

Leading their second full-English album The Dreaming, “You Problem” marks a crucial milestone in the group’s career. The 10-track project follows the group’s first 11-track English album All About Luv released on February 13th, 2020. The latest release gets an extra push from the international theatrical release of a documentary titled Monsta X: The Dreaming, and a performance of the single on Good Morning America
