Watch Monsta X’s Bewitching New Video for ‘Shoot Out’

The South Korean group's video strikes a balance between ominous and seductive, complete with burning Tarot cards and rolling, angst-fueled choreography

South Korean boy group Monsta X make a powerful comeback with “Shoot Out,” the lead single off their second studio album Take 1: Are You There?

Sporting artfully-ripped dark clothing, piercings and unnerving gazes, the seven members of Monsta X ooze sex appeal and danger in the video for “Shoot Out,” eclipsing the gritty aesthetic of their March 2018 single “Jealousy.” The clip strikes a balance between ominous and seductive, complete with burning Tarot cards and rolling, angst-fueled choreography. There are also moments of what could be telekinesis, witchcraft and other hints of dark supernatural power–reminiscent of the symbolic video for the group’s 2016 single “All In”.

“Shoot Out” mixes together trap, rock, and future bass to dramatic effect, highlighting Monsta X’s unique ability to make unexpected combinations of genres work. Rappers Jooheon and I.M particularly grab attention with their aggressive, spitfire delivery, while vocalists Shownu, Wonho, Hyungwon, Kihyun and Minhyuk shine on the addictive rock-meets-future bass chorus. The post-chorus switch to dubstep is also a delightful surprise.

“We want to deliver the message that we are always with our fans,” I.M said in a statement about the songwriting and production on Take 1: Are You There? “We hope this album delivers a good influence to our fans, as it includes different genres of songs. This album is a compilation of intensity and mellow sounds.” According to the group, both “Shoot Out” and the 10-track Take 1: Are You There?  explore the balance between ‘light and dark, good and evil, life and death, and everything on the border.’

On November 30th, Monsta X will make history when they become the first K-Pop group set to perform at iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball concert tour through the United States. Other artists featured on the bill include the likes of Cardi B, Shawn Mendes, Calvin Harris, Camila Cabello, Dua Lipa, G-Eazy and more.
