Born in Dubai and growing up in New Delhi, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Mukul Jiwnani honed his skills as a musician listening to every genre under the sun. Jiwnani went from playing in his school band to opening for artists such as Amit Trivedi and Kailash Kher at IIT Festivals. In 2018 alone he played over 150 shows in the capital and is currently based in Melbourne where he is studying at the Australian Institute of Music. Now, Jiwnani is out with his debut single, the acoustic-led ditty “Brand New Tie.”

The singer-songwriter recalls penning “Brand New Tie” in October last year. He says, “I picked up the guitar, started strumming some chords and started mumbling some words. The whole song wrote itself within an hour and I was instantly in love with it.” Sonically, the track kicks off with percussive acoustic guitar strumming before we’re treated to some bluesy piano playing as the drums kick in while Jiwnani’s raspy vocals come across as quite captivating.

For all the energy the instruments bring, the artist says, “The lyrics are about a guy who purchases a new tie to propose to his partner. He goes to his partner’s house and gets broken up with and kicked out of the house.” Jiwnani adds, “He then sings about his misery and questions his life.” Although the musician admits that he doesn’t relate to the lyrics, he says, “But I am very familiar with the emotion of unknowingness and emptiness.”

“Brand New Tie” was recorded at Melbourne’s Phoenix Studios and produced by Jiwnani. Musician Dan Thomas added drums, New Delhi electro-rockers Inalab’s Archit Anand laid down keys and the capital’s funk/jazz fusion band The Revisit Project’s Karan Wadhwa played bass on the track. The song was then mixed and mastered by Mumbai/Melbourne guitarist and producer/engineer Mohit Rao. Next, Jiwnani has more songs in the pipeline as well as a music video for “Brand New Tie.” He says, “There is a lot of material to be expected in the coming months.”
