Mumbai Musicians Feature in London-Based Fashion Magazine

Singer-songwriter Ankur Tewari, singer-songwriter Nikhil D’Souza and gig organizer and DJ Kunal Lodhia talk about their favorite parts of Mumbai city for UK men’s style retailer Mr Porter’s weekly magazine, ‘The Journal’

London-based style retailer Mr Porter recently shot a portfolio series called ”˜Mumbai Movers,’ which focuses on influential artists from various walks of life. The series features singer-songwriter Ankur Tewari, singer-songwriter Nikhil D’Souza  and gig organizer and DJ, Kunal Lodhia. Says Dsouza about the shoot, “It’s always nice to step outside yourself once in a while.”

After consulting local publications, the team shortlisted a number of individuals before contacting the six men who were finally featured. Each portfolio was styled by Dan May, Style Director at Mr Porter, taking into account the preference and personal style of each individual and shot against busy backdrops ranging from fishing villages to street corners. Says Lodhia, describing how the team conducted the shoot, “The guys helped us put together a look we were really comfortable with. They know so much about clothes. [They] showed us little details in the designs that we didn’t see and appreciated.”

For these artists, the convergence of music and fashion isn’t an unfamiliar concept ”“ both Tewari and D’Souza have been featured in lifestyle magazines in the past and Lodhia walked the ramp at Lakme Fashion Week this March. Says Lodhia, “I think expression ties itself to every art form obviously, how you choose to express yourself, be it clothes or music.” Adds Tewari, “My style is me and an expression of myself, and so is my music.”
