18-year-old Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Prisha Mangat – who goes by her first name – has had a steady growth when it comes to her musical development. From being enrolled in keyboard lessons to training in Indian semi-classical and Western vocals as well as picking up the guitar, the artist even attended a songwriting camp in New York City in 2018. She says, “After years of this foundational training, I have found my own unique vocal style and have not stopped writing ever since.” Now, Prisha is out with her melancholic debut single “Running Out.”

Last year during the lockdown, Prisha found herself having quite a tough time navigating her emotions, which took a toll on her mental health. “I often found myself feeling very lonely while confined at home,” she says. While Prisha knew that the people around her were also going through a similar feeling, she penned “Running Out” as a cry for help. The singer adds, “I just translated exactly what I felt into words and sang it to the melody, and ‘Running Out’ became the rawest, saddest, realest song I’ve ever written.”

The track is a delicate and soft ballad with lush piano arrangements from Ron Cha and ambient guitar parts by Vik Bam while Prisha’s hauntingly beautiful vocals elevate the song. Interestingly, “Running Out” doesn’t have a chorus and Prisha says, “I think the somber energy of the song just didn’t call for a chorus.” The singer-songwriter worked with producer Aman Jagwani on the song, who also mixed and mastered it.

Next, Prisha wants to record and release more tracks this year, including an album and plans on working on collaborations too. While Prisha also awaits moving to the U.S. later this year to study, away from music she also runs a Non-Governmental Organisation along with her brother and friends called Aashayein. “We’re continuing to work towards our cause of empowering the students of India through music.”
